Because ERISA, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, governs both Health and Welfare Benefit Plans (group life, health, dental, disability, and other fringe benefit plans) and Qualified Retirement Plans (Pension, Profit Sharing, and 401(k) Plans), even lawyers who practice outside of this area should know a little bit about this federal law, as almost every private sector employer and benefit plan is subject to ERISA.
