Get Out The Vote

With your help, CAOC is working hard to elect candidates to the Legislature who are not afraid to stand up for consumers and the civil justice system. Your contributions are being directed to races where we can make the most impact for you and your clients.

You can also help by volunteering to help Get Out The Vote (GOTV) in five of our targeted districts. Contact the campaigns directly to see how you can help – you can see the full list below.

Targeted GOTV

This could be the biggest upset of this election and turnout will determine the victor. Alyson Huber is looking to win against heavily favored Jack Sieglock, who has received significant support from big business. Until recently, this was considered a safe district for Sieglock, but national trends could pull another pro-consumer legislator to Sacramento.

Alyson is looking for help all the way until and including Election Day!

Hannah-Beth Jackson is running in perhaps the most contested race in California. Hannah-Beth has been a fierce champion for consumers during her tenure in the Assembly. Her opponent, Tony Strickland, was the president of the California Club for Growth – a group known primarily for its efforts at anti-consumer “tort reform.” It’s no surprise that Strickland is benefiting from hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions by oil companies, tobacco companies and the medical industry, including dentists, doctors, insurance companies and big pharmaceutical companies.

Campaign Information

If you would like to volunteer in non-targeted districts, you can check with the Republican Party or the Democratic Party for volunteer opportunities.

In addition to supporting pro-consumer candidates, CAOC also takes positions on initiatives that impact the civil justice system. In this election, we have endorsed the "NO” side of both Proposition 8 and Proposition 11.

It was the ruling of a class action lawsuit, Brown v. Board of Education, which ended the legal justification for segregation. Another unprejudiced interpretation of the law has recently granted same-sex couples the right to marry. CAOC strongly opposes Proposition 8 as a step backward for civil rights. See our press release here.

Proposition 11 is a confusing and unnecessary attempt at reform backed by major business interests.  It would move redistricting into the hands of inexperienced amateurs that are not accountable to voters. It also represents a huge potential risk to diluting minority representation within the Legislature. We oppose this “reform” as unfair, complicated and prone to manipulation.

For questions on other issues on the ballot, we recommend visiting the League of Women Voters Non Partisan website which presents balanced descriptions of each measure along with key support and opposition.

AAJ is also helping to line up volunteers for non-partisan election protection efforts.  Volunteers must attend (in-person) a 90 minute training session and sign up for a 4-5 hour shift to staff a non-partisan hotline. This effort is not affiliated in any way with any candidate or political party. Click here to volunteer as an AAJ Member.

As always, thank you for your support!
