The Consumer Attorneys of California Lobby Day 2007 took place on Law Day, which was Tuesday, May 1. Nearly 100 CAOC members joined us in Sacramento for a full day of lobbying on vital consumer issues. Now in its eighth consecutive year, Lobby Day came together through the tireless efforts of our association staff and was a huge success.

Members began their day with a free half credit of ethics MCLE before heading to the State Capitol to lobby for our legislative agenda. Each participant received a Lobby Day packet complete with legislative materials and tip sheets on lobbying. In addition, participants left packets of information with legislators, which included a DVD that detailed stories of victims of medical errors. CAOC board member Bruce Brusavich sponsored the production of the DVD.

Assembly Member Dave Jones said about his visit with a group from CAOC, “As a member of the Assembly, I am visited all year long by various groups and lobbied on hundreds of topics. It's refreshing talking to the Consumer Attorneys because they just don't focus on how the laws we make here in the State Capitol affect them personally, but also on how they affect all Californians, especially the less powerful.”

We were fortunate enough to have Senator Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) as our keynote speaker during our luncheon sponsored by CAOC President Ray Boucher. Senator Kuehl, a longtime advocate of consumer legal rights and stalwart member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, gave the group an update on health care issues.

When asked about her thoughts on Lobby Day, Senator Kuehl said “The Consumer Attorneys of California Lobby Day was an extremely successful day in the Capitol. The attorneys who visited and the materials they brought were very effective in educating my colleagues on issues related to medical errors. I've always been proud of my involvement with CAOC and was happy to have been chosen as the day's speaker. I admire the CAOC's willingness to fight for access to justice for all those who could never otherwise dream of fighting a large corporation. Keep up the good work!"

We were also pleased to honor as the CAOC Consumer Advocate of the Year, Rose Ann DeMoro, Executive Director of the California Nurses Association.

This was the first year that CAOC also hosted a tent outside the Capitol for our members to discuss legal issues with members of the public.

The day concluded with a lovely outdoor reception at Spataro Restaurant, which was generously sponsored by CAOC President Elect and Legislative Chair, Don Ernst. Members of the Legislature and their staff, and several Constitutional Officers joined our members at the reception.

Here at CAOC, we are already in the planning stages for next year’s Lobby Day in order to ensure an even more spectacular event than this year’s! Lobby Day 2008 will be once again, held on Law Day, May 1. Please email anna@caoc.org with any questions, suggestions or scheduling requests for next year.
