Central Valley Seminar Gets Rave Reviews

By Stuart Chandler

On April 10th the Central California Trial Lawyers Association joined forces with the Consumer Attorneys of California to offer a “nuts and bolts” deposition seminar. The program surpassed all expectations. Over 60 Central Valley litigators filled the private patio of Fresno’s elegant Chef’s Table at The Elbow Room restaurant. Many of those in attendance were newer lawyers who had never been to a CAOC event. Several students from the San Joaquin College of Law also showed up. No doubt they came to learn, and the fact that they had been offered free drinks by members of the CCTLA Board had nothing to do with it.

The program was offered “dinner theatre” style in the covered patio. A social hour was followed by a fabulous steak & seafood meal served during the 2½ hour program. Robin Brewer, a member of CAOC’s Education Committee served as moderator. The two speakers offered much more than nuts and bolts – giving the crowd many golden nuggets from true trial masters. Offering insights from the plaintiff perspective was Stephen M. Garcia of Long Beach. Steve is well known for his high energy, thorough preparation and exceptionally strategic deposition skills. He is also particularly well known in the Central Valley for several high value verdicts and settlements in nursing home cases in Fresno. The defense perspective was presented by Lawrence Wayte of the Fresno based firm McCormick, Barstow, Sheppard, Wayte and Carruth. He has defended doctors, lawyers and other professionals for decades. Larry is renowned not only for his legal talent, but also for his high ethical standards. He has been a role model for countless trial lawyers (both defense and plaintiff) in the Central Valley.

Following the meeting, many commented that it was one of the best seminars they had ever attended. The information was helpful, the setting was ideal and having cocktail waitresses serving throughout the 2½ hours made the seminar an even more pleasant experience. Everyone appreciated Robin Brewer and Lori Sarracino traveling from Sacramento and Steve Garcia flying up from Long Beach. This seminar was a great benefit to both organizations and we look forward to future co-sponsored events.
